UNITED WIN AT YORK

Jack Milburn Joins in Goal Scoring Feast

Leeds United beat York City at Bootham Crescent last night in a match for the benefit of Tommy Fenoughty, the the York inside forward, by seven goals to one. The cash taken at the turnstiles was £140, and, together with the ticket money, should result in a cheque of between £180 and £200. The visitors display was clever and attractive, though it was obvious, at times, that they were playing well within themselves. Their ball control, general understanding, and cleverness were at all times marked, and they had far less running about to do than their opponents. Clever ground shots in the twenty-third and twenty-eighth minute of the first half demonstrated the United's superiority, before Wilcockson had the misfortune, in intercepting a centre from Cochrane, to put the ball in the City net. In the second half, the home team had quite a long spell of attacking. Indeed, United invited them to exploit their ability in this direction, but the City shooting was poor, and their forwards were altogether far too hesitant. The United went on the attack more than once in this period , and a fine "first time" shot by Cochrane increased their lead. Eventually Hathaway headed through for City, but it only had the effect of putting United really on their mettle. Three minutes later Duggan scored from what appeared to be an offside position, and half a minute later Firth sped through the City attack to get another splendid goal. The game which was obviously of an exhibition character, terminated with Jack Milburn, United's left full back, coming up to join the attack, and he finally scored, to put the seal on United's superiority.
